Mastering Mongolian Beef in Your Air Fryer

The culinary magic of the air fryer continues to captivate home cooks worldwide, and for good reason. It offers an effortless path to crispy textures, healthier meals, and significantly reduced cooking times. This week, we’re diving deep into an air fryer triumph: a mouthwatering Air Fryer Mongolian Beef recipe that promises to become a staple in your dinner rotation. Not only is it incredibly simple to prepare, but it’s also a fantastic gluten-free option, bringing the beloved flavors of your favorite Asian restaurant right into your kitchen.

For those navigating a gluten-free lifestyle, the joy of ordering out from certain cuisines can often be bittersweet, or simply off-limits. Mongolian Beef, with its rich, savory-sweet sauce and tender strips of beef, is a classic that many miss. My journey with the air fryer began with a mission to recreate these cherished dishes at home, ensuring they were both delicious and safe for my gluten-free diet. What started as a sad realization that my favorite local Asian restaurant was no longer an option turned into an exciting culinary adventure, all thanks to the versatility of the air fryer.

This recipe is an adaptation of my popular Mongolian Beef Egg Roll Bowls, redesigned for the air fryer to achieve that perfect crisp exterior and tender interior in record time. Forget the greasy deep-fryer or the laborious stir-fry; the air fryer delivers exceptional results with minimal fuss, making this dish a genuine weeknight hero.

The Secret to Tender Mongolian Beef: Thin Slicing is Key

The foundation of an authentic and delightfully tender Mongolian Beef lies in the cut and preparation of the steak. For this recipe, flank steak is the star, specifically thinly sliced. This ensures that the beef cooks quickly and absorbs the rich sauce effectively, yielding that melt-in-your-mouth texture we all crave. It’s a common pitfall to use a thick cut of steak, which, while delicious in other applications, can result in a chewy and less enjoyable experience for this particular dish.

I recall an instance when planning this meal: I ordered grocery pickup and, much to my surprise, received a thick cut of steak instead of the thin flank steak I requested. While a thick steak is generally a welcome sight, for Mongolian Beef, it poses a challenge. The lesson learned? Always prioritize thin slicing for these Asian-inspired recipes. If you can’t find pre-sliced thin steak, don’t worry! You can easily slice flank steak yourself against the grain to achieve the desired thinness. Pop it in the freezer for about 20-30 minutes before slicing to make it firmer and easier to cut into uniform strips.

Choosing the Right Air Fryer for Your Culinary Adventures

I personally enjoy using a Ninja Foodi Air Fryer for its versatility and consistent performance. However, the beauty of air frying is that most models can achieve similar fantastic results. Crafting Your Air Fryer Mongolian Beef: Step-by-Step Perfection

Let’s dive into the simple steps to create this incredible Air Fryer Mongolian Beef. The process is designed for maximum flavor with minimal effort, making it ideal for busy weeknights.

The Coating: Your Secret to Crispy Texture and Sauce Adhesion

After thinly slicing your flank steak, the very first crucial step is to coat it thoroughly with cornstarch. This isn’t just for a subtle crispness; the cornstarch plays a vital role in creating a light, slightly crispy exterior on the beef, which is characteristic of restaurant-style Mongolian Beef. More importantly, it helps the savory sauce cling beautifully to each piece of meat, ensuring every bite is bursting with flavor. If cornstarch isn’t available, potato starch is an excellent alternative, offering similar results. However, I strongly advise against using regular flour, as it tends not to adhere to the meat as effectively and can result in a less desirable texture.

Perfect Pairings for a Complete Meal

When it comes to serving this delightful Mongolian Beef, a classic accompaniment is white rice, which perfectly soaks up the extra sauce. I also love to pair it with steamed green beans for a pop of color and freshness, balancing the rich flavors of the beef. This combination is my go-to for these types of Asian-inspired meals, creating a satisfying and well-rounded dinner.

The Quick Cook and Flavor Infusion Process

One of the best aspects of this Air Fryer Mongolian Beef is its speed. The thinly sliced steak cooks in approximately 10 minutes on each side in the air fryer, totaling around 20 minutes for perfect doneness. While the beef crisps up in the air fryer, you can simultaneously prepare the rich, luscious sauce in a small saucepan and get your rice cooking. Once both components are ready, the magic happens: immerse the cooked steak in the warm sauce, allowing it to soak and absorb all those incredible flavors for 5-10 minutes. This infusion step is what truly transforms the dish, making the beef incredibly tender and flavorful.

To ensure your beef reaches safe internal temperatures and your desired doneness, I always recommend using a quick test thermometer. This is an easy and reliable way to confirm the meat is at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit. The entire process, from prep to plate, can be completed in 30 minutes or less, and you won’t even need to turn on your oven. That’s a win-win in my book, especially during warmer months or busy evenings!

Enjoy this fantastic Air Fryer Mongolian Beef – it’s a recipe that perfectly combines convenience, health, and incredible taste!

Ingredients

Meat

  • 1 Lb Flank Steak
  • 1/4 Cup Corn Starch
  • Cooking Oil spray of Choice Grapeseed etc.

Sauce

  • 2 Tsp Vegetable Oil
  • 1/2 Tsp Ginger
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 1/2 Cup Soy Sauce or Gluten Free Soy Sauce
  • 1/2 Cup Water
  • 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar Packed

Extras

  • Cooked Rice
  • Green Beans
  • Green Onions

Instructions

  • Thinly slice the steak into long, uniform pieces, then coat each piece thoroughly with cornstarch.
  • Arrange the coated steak in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Ensure not to overcrowd the basket. Lightly spray the steak with your cooking oil of choice (e.g., grapeseed oil).
  • Cook at 390°F (199°C) for 5 minutes on each side. (Note: Initial testing cooked for 10 minutes per side; however, based on feedback for optimal tenderness, we recommend starting with 5 minutes per side and adjusting as needed for your desired doneness and air fryer model.)
  • While the steak is air frying, combine all sauce ingredients (vegetable oil, ginger, minced garlic, soy sauce/gluten-free soy sauce, water, brown sugar) in a medium-sized saucepan. Heat on medium-high.
  • Whisk the sauce ingredients together continuously until the mixture reaches a low boil and slightly thickens. Reduce heat to low to keep warm.
  • Once both the steak and sauce are cooked, transfer the air-fried steak into a bowl with the warm sauce. Let it soak and absorb the flavors for about 5-10 minutes. This step is key for maximum tenderness and flavor infusion.
  • When ready to serve, use tongs to remove the steak from the sauce, allowing any excess sauce to drip off.
  • Serve the Mongolian beef over a bed of cooked rice and steamed green beans. Garnish with fresh green onions if desired, and add extra sauce to your plate if you prefer more.

Notes

Remember that all air fryers tend to heat differently. We suggest checking the steak after about 5 minutes to ensure it reaches your desired doneness.

If the meat appears too floury after coating, a light spray of cooking oil can help.
