Speaking of making life easier, let me share one of my absolute sanity-savers: Walmart Online Grocery Pickup. For over a year now, this service has completely transformed how I manage our grocery shopping. Imagine ordering everything you need from the comfort of your couch, at any hour, without the chaos of navigating aisles with active kids. No more wrestling shopping carts, no more impromptu meltdowns, and certainly no more impulse buys that derail the budget.
The process is incredibly simple: I select my groceries online, choose a convenient pickup time, and then just drive to Walmart. A friendly associate loads my car, and I’m off. It’s not just a time-saver; it’s a stress-reducer. This efficiency allows me to spend more quality time with my family, especially during the precious summer months, rather than being stuck in the grocery store. Cooking Up Memories: Family Fun in the Kitchen
One of my favorite aspects of making these popovers is the opportunity it creates for family bonding. My daughter, in particular, absolutely loves helping me in the kitchen. She’s developing into quite the aspiring chef, always eager to watch cooking and baking shows and experiment with new recipes. It’s truly wonderful to see her passion grow. Who knows, maybe one day this blog will be passed down to her – what a fun legacy that would be!

Involving children in meal preparation not only teaches them valuable life skills but also creates lasting memories. These Ham & Cheese Stuffed Popovers are simple enough for little hands to help with tasks like mixing batter or carefully placing the ham and cheese. It’s a wonderful way to connect and instill a love for cooking from an early age, fostering confidence and creativity in the kitchen.

Expert Tips for Perfectly Stuffed Popovers
Achieving those wonderfully light and airy popovers with a delicious savory filling is easier than you might think with a few key techniques. Here are my top tips to ensure your Ham & Cheese Stuffed Popovers turn out perfectly every time:
The Right Pan Makes a Difference

- **Popover Pan vs. Muffin Tin:** While a standard muffin tin can work in a pinch, I highly recommend investing in an actual popover pan. These pans feature deeper, often more separated cups, which allow the batter to rise dramatically and achieve that characteristic “popover” shape. The extra space facilitates better air circulation and prevents the popovers from steaming too much. If you’re using a muffin tin, make sure not to fill the cups more than three-quarters full to prevent spillage as they expand. Regardless of the pan type, ensure it’s thoroughly greased with non-stick cooking spray, reaching every crevice.
- **Preheat Your Pan:** A crucial step for popovers is to preheat your pan in the oven before adding the batter. This initial burst of heat helps create the steam needed for the dramatic rise and crispy exterior. A hot pan ensures the batter starts cooking immediately, creating a crisp crust and a hollow, airy interior. Don’t skip this step!
Filling and Flavor Innovations

- **Honey Mustard Versatility:** The honey mustard adds a wonderful tangy-sweet note that complements the ham and cheese beautifully. You can swirl it directly into the batter before baking for an integrated flavor, or offer it as a dipping sauce on the side once the popovers are done. Experiment with other dipping sauces too, like ranch, BBQ sauce, or even a spicy sriracha mayo, to cater to different tastes and add a new dimension to each bite.
- **Hillshire Farm Variety Pack:** The beauty of using the Hillshire Farm 1 lb. Variety Pack is the choice it offers. You can let family members pick between the savory oven-roasted turkey or the subtly sweet honey ham, or simply make a few of each for a delightful assortment. This makes the meal customizable and ensures everyone gets exactly what they like, adding a fun element of choice to mealtime.
- **Cheese Choices:** While Colby Jack offers a great melt and flavor, feel free to experiment with other cheeses like sharp cheddar for a more robust taste, mild mozzarella for a creamy texture, or even Gruyère for a nutty, sophisticated twist. A blend of cheeses can also add complexity.
Batter and Baking Brilliance

- **Room Temperature Ingredients:** For the best results, ensure your eggs and milk are at room temperature. Cold ingredients can cause the melted butter to seize up and can hinder the batter from combining smoothly, potentially affecting the rise and texture of your popovers. Allowing them to sit out for about 30 minutes before mixing makes a significant difference.
- **Don’t Overmix:** Mix the batter until just combined and smooth. Overmixing can develop the gluten too much, leading to tougher, chewier popovers instead of the desired light and airy texture. A few small lumps are perfectly fine; in fact, they often dissolve during baking.
- **Gluten-Free Adaptation:** For Gluten-Free Ham & Cheese Stuffed Popovers, simply substitute regular all-purpose flour with a high-quality gluten-free all-purpose flour blend. Ensure your blend contains xanthan gum, or add about 1/2 teaspoon per cup of flour if it doesn’t, to help with structure and elasticity. The rest of the recipe remains the same, making it incredibly easy to cater to dietary needs without compromising on flavor or texture.
- **Temperature Control:** The baking process for popovers typically involves two different temperatures. Starting at a high temperature (425°F or 220°C) creates a rapid rise and sets the structure due to the quick creation of steam. Reducing the heat (to 325°F or 160°C) allows the popovers to cook through without burning, resulting in a beautifully golden brown finish and a fully cooked interior. Crucially, **avoid opening the oven door during the first 20-25 minutes** to prevent them from deflating.
- **Serve Warm:** Popovers are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven when they are at their fluffiest and most flavorful.

Delightful Pairings for Your Stuffed Popovers
These Ham & Cheese Stuffed Popovers are hearty enough to be a meal on their own, especially for a light lunch or dinner. However, they also pair wonderfully with a variety of side dishes to create a more complete and satisfying spread. Consider serving them alongside:
- **Baked Potato Chips:** A classic, crunchy complement that provides a satisfying texture contrast to the soft popovers. They’re a healthier alternative to fried chips and always a crowd-pleaser.
- **Air Fryer Fried Pickles:** For a touch of tangy, savory goodness with minimal oil, these are a fun and unique side dish that adds a delightful zing to the meal.
- **Baked Onion Rings:** Another healthier alternative to traditional fried sides, offering a sweet and crispy accompaniment that pairs beautifully with the savory ham and cheese.
- **A Simple Green Salad:** A light, fresh salad with a vibrant vinaigrette dressing would balance the richness of the popovers beautifully, adding a refreshing element to your meal.
- **Creamy Tomato Soup:** For a comforting, diner-style meal, serve them alongside a warm bowl of creamy tomato soup. The popovers can even be used for dipping!
- **Roasted Vegetables:** Seasonal roasted vegetables like asparagus, broccoli, or bell peppers offer a nutritious and flavorful side that complements almost any main dish.
Whether you’re enjoying a relaxed summer evening, planning a fun weekend brunch, or need a quick and satisfying meal that pleases everyone, these Ham & Cheese Stuffed Popovers are sure to be a hit. They combine ease of preparation with incredible flavor, making them a perfect addition to your family’s collection of favorite recipes. So sit back, relax, and savor every delicious bite!

Rating: 4.88 out of 5 stars (based on 8 reviews)
Ingredients
- 1 Cup All-Purpose Flour or Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour
- 1/4 Tsp Salt
- 3 Large Eggs (at room temperature)
- 1 Cup Milk (preferably whole milk, at room temperature)
- 2 Tbsp Unsalted Butter, melted
- Hillshire Farm 1 lb. Variety Pack (Turkey & Honey Ham), thinly sliced
- Shredded Colby Jack Cheese (or preferred cheese)
- Honey Mustard
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Lightly spray a popover pan (or muffin tin) with non-stick cooking spray. For best results, place the empty pan in the preheating oven for 5-10 minutes to get it piping hot.
- While the oven and pan are warming, combine the flour, salt, eggs, milk, and melted butter in a large bowl. Whisk until the mixture forms a smooth, creamy batter. Avoid overmixing; a few small lumps are acceptable.
- Carefully remove the hot pan from the oven (use oven mitts!).
- Fill each cup approximately 1/4 full with batter.
- Add two slices of ham (folded or torn to fit) and about 1/8 cup of shredded cheese into each cup, directly on top of the batter.
- Add a small swirl of honey mustard on top of the ham and cheese filling in each cup.
- Top each cup with another 1/4 portion of batter, the goal is to keep each cup about 1/2 to 3/4 full in total. Do not overfill.
- Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 20 minutes. **It is crucial not to open the oven door during this time, as it can cause the popovers to deflate.**
- After 20 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to 325°F (160°C) and continue baking for another 15 minutes, or until the popovers are beautifully golden brown and firm to the touch.
- Remove from oven, let cool slightly in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm for the best taste and texture.
