No Ninja Foodi? No Problem! Versatile Cooking Methods
Don’t own a Ninja Foodi yet? That’s perfectly fine! This recipe is incredibly adaptable. In fact, it was inspired by my popular Grilled Sweet and Sour Chicken Skewers. This means you have a variety of ways to prepare them, and they’ll turn out equally delicious no matter your cooking method!
For those without a Ninja Foodi, consider these alternative cooking methods:
- Grilling: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grates to prevent sticking. Cook the skewers for 8-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through and lightly charred.
- Oven Baking: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the skewers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). For extra crispiness, you can finish under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
- Stovetop (Grill Pan or Skillet): Heat a grill pan or large skillet over medium-high heat with a little oil. Cook the skewers for 10-15 minutes, turning frequently, until the chicken is browned and cooked through.
The beauty of this recipe lies in its flexibility, ensuring everyone can enjoy these fantastic sweet and sour chicken skewers, regardless of their kitchen appliances.
How to Make Ninja Foodi Chicken Skewers: Your Essential Guide

Making these sweet and sour chicken skewers in your Ninja Foodi is remarkably straightforward. The key to success is having the right accessories and a few simple preparation steps.
Essential Equipment: The Skewer Stand
The first thing you’ll need is a skewer stand specifically designed for the Ninja Foodi. This accessory is a game-changer, allowing you to cook multiple skewers vertically, maximizing space and ensuring even cooking. It’s incredibly versatile and can be used for a variety of other recipes, from grilling vegetables to cooking other types of meats.

Preparation is Key
Once you have your stand, the process becomes incredibly simple: it’s mainly about prepping your ingredients and assembling them onto the skewers before placing them into the Ninja Foodi. This hands-on preparation is quick, making the actual cooking time a breeze.
Tips for Making Ninja Foodi Sweet and Sour Chicken Skewers Perfectly
Achieving perfectly tender and flavorful sweet and sour chicken skewers requires a few key considerations:
Choosing the Right Chicken

For this recipe, we highly recommend using boneless, skinless chicken thighs. They are a superior choice because they retain moisture better and are less prone to drying out during the cooking process compared to chicken breast. Their slightly higher fat content contributes to a more succulent and flavorful skewer. We used four chicken thighs, which were then cut in half to create eight perfectly sized pieces for the skewers. This yields a generous eight skewers in total.

Mastering the Sauce Application
When preparing your homemade sweet and sour sauce (or even if you’re using a store-bought version), it’s crucial to manage it correctly. You will need to reserve a portion of the sauce. Initially, a small amount will be used to coat the raw chicken pieces before cooking. The remaining, untouched sauce will be served alongside the cooked skewers. This two-bowl method is vital to prevent cross-contamination and ensure food safety.
Perfect Pairings
These skewers are fantastic on their own, but they truly shine when served with complementary side dishes. We highly recommend pairing them with fresh, steamed broccoli or a colorful mixed vegetable medley. A generous serving of cooked rice is also an excellent choice; you can even make it easily using this Ninja Foodi Rice recipe for a complete, effortless meal.
Can You Use Store-Bought Sweet and Sour Sauce?
Absolutely! While our homemade sauce recipe is fantastic, you can certainly opt for a high-quality store-bought sweet and sour sauce to save time. This flexibility makes the recipe even more convenient for busy days. Beyond classic sweet and sour, feel free to experiment with other Asian-inspired sauces like Kung Pao or Teriyaki for a different flavor profile.

The cooking method remains the same whether you use homemade or store-bought sauce. Just remember the important tip mentioned earlier: always use a separate, small dish to brush the sauce onto the raw chicken. Keep the main bowl of sauce entirely separate and uncontaminated, so it can be safely served as a dipping or pouring sauce with your finished meal.
With these guidelines and tips, you’re all set to create a truly memorable meal. It’s time to savor these incredibly delicious Ninja Foodi Sweet and Sour Chicken Skewers!

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins
Total Time: 25 mins
Ingredients
- 4 Boneless, Skinless Chicken Thighs (Halved to make 8)
- 8 Skewer Sticks or Skewer Set for Ninja Foodi
- 1 Cup Pineapple Chunks & Juice
- 1 Green Pepper, Diced
- 1 Onion, Diced
Sauce Ingredients:
- 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 Garlic Clove, Crushed
- 1 3/4 Cup Water
- 3/4 Cup Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Distilled Vinegar
- 2 Tbsp Gluten-Free Soy Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Ketchup
- 1/4 Cup Cornstarch
- 1/2 Tsp Sesame Seeds
Instructions
- This recipe is designed for the Ninja Foodi skewer stand. Please refer to the article for specific product recommendations.
- Take 4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs and cut them in half to ensure they fit properly on the metal skewer sticks provided with your stand. You may season the chicken with salt and pepper at this stage if desired.
- Thread the diced green pepper, onion, and pineapple chunks onto each skewer, alternating with the chicken pieces. For best results, start and end with a vegetable to secure the chicken. Repeat this process for all 8 skewers.
- In a medium-sized saucepan, warm the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the crushed garlic clove, 1 1/2 cups of water, sugar, distilled vinegar, gluten-free soy sauce, and the reserved pineapple juice. Bring the mixture to a boil.
- In a small separate dish, whisk together the 1/4 cup of cornstarch with the remaining 1/4 cup of water until the cornstarch is fully dissolved, creating a slurry.
- Once the sauce in the saucepan is boiling, whisk in the ketchup and the cornstarch mixture. Continue to whisk vigorously until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency. Stir in the sesame seeds.
- Pour approximately 1/4 cup of the prepared sauce into a small, separate bowl. This portion will be used to coat the raw chicken. Reserve the remaining sauce for serving.
- (Optional Tip): For a crispier exterior, after coating the chicken with sauce, lightly spray the skewers with grapeseed oil or another cooking spray.
- Using the 1/4 cup of sauce set aside, brush generously over the chicken pieces on each skewer.
- Carefully place the assembled skewer stand, with the skewers, into the pot of your Ninja Foodi.
- Select the Air Crisp function on your Ninja Foodi and cook at 390°F (199°C) for 15 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches at least 165°F (74°C) using a meat thermometer.
- Once cooked, carefully remove the skewers from the Ninja Foodi. Serve immediately over rice and your favorite vegetables, drizzling with the reserved sweet and sour sauce.
