Ah, summer! For many, it’s already here; for others, it’s just around the corner. Our son recently finished his school year, and our daughter is eagerly counting down her last few days before summer break officially begins. As a busy parent, I can confidently say I am beyond ready for the relaxed pace, the opportunity to sleep in a bit, and those beautiful, long evenings filled with sunshine. While I know that in two short months, I’ll be longing for the structure of school days once more, for now, I’m focused on soaking up every precious moment. This transition also means a shift in our meal planning. Gone are the quick school-day lunchbox preps, replaced by a need for versatile, family-friendly meals that work for both lunch and dinner. And that’s exactly where these incredible Ham & Cheese Stuffed Popovers shine – they are consistently a huge hit with everyone!

One of the greatest joys of cooking this recipe is the involvement of my daughter. She absolutely loves helping me in the kitchen and is quickly developing into quite a capable young cook. Given the chance, she would happily spend her entire day watching cooking and baking shows! It’s truly a delight to watch her passion for culinary arts grow, and I often find myself wondering what incredible path she’ll choose in life. Who knows, perhaps one day I’ll be able to pass this very blog along to her when she’s older and ready to share her own creations. Wouldn’t that be a wonderful legacy? I certainly think so!

Essential Ingredients for Delectable Ham & Cheese Stuffed Popovers
Crafting these delicious popovers requires a few key components. Here’s what you’ll need to gather to bring this family-favorite meal to life:
- Hillshire Farm1 lb. Variety Pack (containing both Turkey & Honey Ham for versatile fillings)
- Shredded Colby Jack Cheese (or your favorite meltable cheese)
- Honey Mustard (for a sweet and savory kick)
- Regular All-Purpose Flour or a high-quality Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour blend (ensure it’s a 1:1 baking blend for best results if going gluten-free)
- Salt (enhances all the flavors)
- Large Eggs (room temperature eggs often yield better results for popovers)
- Milk (whole milk or a dairy-free alternative can be used)
- Unsalted Butter (melted, for richness and flavor)
- Popover Pan (highly recommended for that classic popover shape and rise)
Expert Tips for Perfect Ham & Cheese Stuffed Popovers

- The Right Pan Makes All the Difference: For truly exceptional popovers that live up to their name, using an actual popover pan is highly recommended. These pans feature deep, narrow cups that encourage the batter to climb high and create that iconic “pop” and hollow center. The unique shape allows for maximum air circulation and even baking, resulting in a delightfully crisp exterior and a tender, airy interior. If you don’t have a specific popover pan, a standard muffin tin can be used as a substitute. However, be mindful not to overfill the muffin cups – no more than three-quarters full – to prevent spillage as they rise. Preheat your pan along with the oven; a hot pan helps create steam, which is key to their dramatic rise.

- Customize Your Condiments: Honey mustard adds a wonderful sweet and tangy contrast to the savory ham and cheese filling. You can incorporate it directly into the popover as a swirl before baking, infusing every bite with its flavor. Alternatively, serve it on the side as a dipping sauce, alongside other favorites like ranch dressing, barbecue sauce, or even a simple spicy ketchup. Offering a variety of dipping options allows each family member to personalize their popover experience, making mealtime even more fun and interactive.

- Embrace the Variety Pack: The Hillshire Farm Variety Pack is an ingenious choice for this recipe, offering both honey ham and oven-roasted turkey. This gives you the flexibility to cater to different preferences within your family. You can make a batch of all ham popovers, all turkey popovers, or create a delicious mix of both. This simple variation keeps the meal exciting and ensures everyone finds a flavor they love, adding an element of customization that makes this dish truly special. Consider adding other lunch meats too, for even more variety, like roast beef or salami for a truly gourmet twist.
- Temperature Matters: Ensure your eggs and milk are at room temperature. This helps them incorporate more smoothly into the batter, leading to a lighter, airier popover. Cold ingredients can sometimes create a denser texture.
- The Golden Rule of Baking Popovers: Avoid opening the oven door during the initial baking phase! The sudden drop in temperature can cause the popovers to collapse, preventing that beautiful rise. Only open the door when it’s time to reduce the heat or to check for doneness after the primary baking time.

Perfect Pairings for Your Ham & Cheese Stuffed Popovers
These savory popovers are wonderfully satisfying on their own, but they also pair beautifully with a variety of side dishes to create a complete and balanced meal. Here are some delicious ideas to complement your popovers:
- Homemade Baked Potato Chips: A lighter, healthier alternative to traditional fried chips, these offer a delightful crunch that contrasts perfectly with the soft popovers. Season them simply with salt, or try paprika and garlic powder for extra flavor.
- Crispy Air Fryer Fried Pickles: The tangy and savory notes of fried pickles are an excellent counterpoint to the rich ham and cheese. Using an air fryer makes them incredibly easy and less greasy.
- Oven-Baked Onion Rings: Sweet and crispy, baked onion rings are a classic comfort food side that kids and adults alike will adore. They add another layer of texture and flavor without the deep-frying fuss.
- Fresh Green Salad: For a lighter, fresher complement, a simple garden salad with a vinaigrette dressing provides a refreshing balance to the savory popovers.
- Tomato Soup: A warm bowl of creamy tomato soup makes for a comforting and classic pairing, perfect for dipping your popovers.
With these tips and pairing suggestions, you’re ready to create a truly memorable meal. So, go ahead, sit back, relax, and savor every delicious bite of your homemade Ham & Cheese Stuffed Popover!

Ingredients
- 1 Cup All Purpose Flour or Gluten Free All Purpose Flour
- 1/4 Tsp Salt
- 3 Large Eggs
- 1 Cup Milk
- 2 Tbsp Unsalted Butter Melted
- Hillshire Farm 1 lb. Variety Pack Turkey & Honey Ham, thinly sliced
- Shredded Colby Jack Cheese about 1/8 cup per popover
- Honey Mustard for filling or dipping
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to a high temperature of 425°F (220°C).
-
Thoroughly spray your popover pan or muffin tin with a non-stick cooking spray to ensure easy removal. Place the sprayed pan into the preheating oven to warm up while you prepare the batter.
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour (or gluten-free blend), salt, eggs, milk, and melted butter. Whisk vigorously until the mixture forms a smooth, creamy batter with no lumps. For best results, ensure ingredients are at room temperature.
-
Carefully remove the hot pan from the oven. Exercise caution, as it will be very hot.
-
Promptly fill each preheated cup approximately 1/4 of the way with the popover batter. Then, add about two slices of your chosen Hillshire Farm ham or turkey, followed by roughly 1/8 cup of shredded Colby Jack cheese into each cup.
-
Add a small swirl of honey mustard directly on top of the ham and cheese filling in each cup.
-
Top the filling with another 1/4 portion of batter. The goal is for each cup to be between 1/2 to 3/4 full in total, allowing ample space for the popovers to rise dramatically.
-
Bake these delightful popovers for 20 minutes at 425°F (220°C). Crucially, do not open the oven door during this initial high-heat phase. After 20 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to 325°F (160°C) and continue baking for another 15 minutes, or until the popovers are beautifully golden brown and fully puffed. Serve warm and enjoy!
