Spring’s Promise: The 2017 Garden

After a hiatus spanning several years, the beloved tradition of annual gardening has triumphantly returned to our lives. What was once a cherished ritual, marking the changing seasons and bringing immense joy, had temporarily faded as life’s demanding currents steered us in different directions. However, this year, the soil beneath our fingertips and the prospect of homegrown bounty have rekindled a deep-seated passion, restoring a sense of peace and purpose not just for me, but for my husband as well. It feels as though we’ve finally found our way back to our happy place, a serene sanctuary where nature’s rhythm dictates our days and the promise of fresh produce fills us with anticipation.

Cultivating Joy: The Return to Our Roots

The journey back to our garden has been a heartwarming experience, filled with renewed enthusiasm and a sense of collaborative spirit. While I might not be the biggest fan of getting my hands deep into the dirt for planting – a task my husband typically embraces with gusto – I absolutely adore the subsequent stages. There’s an unparalleled satisfaction in picking the ripe produce, bringing it indoors, and transforming it into delicious, wholesome meals. This year, however, I did roll up my sleeves and happily joined my mom and the kids in the initial planting phase, a rare but delightful departure from my usual role as the chief culinary creator. My husband, ever the dedicated gardener, has taken on the primary responsibility for the ongoing upkeep and nurturing of our burgeoning garden, ensuring every plant receives the attention it needs to thrive. This division of labor allows us both to savor the aspects of gardening we enjoy most, culminating in the joyous reward of fresh, tasty ingredients ready for the kitchen.

Our re-entry into the world of gardening this year was a significant undertaking, made even more special by the decision to embark on a joint effort with my parents. This collaborative approach not only doubled the hands and expertise but also transformed the entire process into a wonderful family bonding experience. Together, we designed and constructed three magnificent raised garden beds, a strategic choice that offers numerous benefits, from better soil control and drainage to easier accessibility for all ages. These beds are now brimming with a diverse array of vegetables, each promising a future harvest of delightful flavors. Of course, within this verdant assortment, I have my undisputed favorites. High on that list is okra. We absolutely adore okra, and its often prohibitive cost or scarcity at local grocery stores makes growing it ourselves an incredibly rewarding endeavor. Being able to harvest it directly from our backyard is a luxury we cherish. To extend our enjoyment, I also make sure to freeze a substantial portion, ensuring a supply that lasts throughout the year. However, with my daughter’s insatiable love for it – she eats it like candy! – I suspect our frozen stash might not last as long as intended this season!

Little Hands, Big Lessons: Kids in the Garden

One of the most heartwarming aspects of this year’s gardening adventure has been the active involvement of our children. Watching their curiosity and enthusiasm as they participated in the planting process was truly delightful. While their seeding techniques might lead to a somewhat haphazard arrangement of crops – we might find peas growing where carrots should be! – this very unpredictability is part of the charm. It promises to be an incredible learning experience for them, as they witness firsthand the magical transformation of tiny seeds into the delicious food that graces our table. My son, in particular, has completely fallen in love with the garden. Every single day, he eagerly ventures outside, peering over the beds, searching for any signs of growth. He’s trying his best to be patient, but true patience is a virtue he’s still cultivating – a trait he may or may not have inherited from me! This daily ritual of observation and anticipation is priceless, fostering a deeper connection to nature and an appreciation for where our food comes from.

Our commitment to sustainable living extends beyond just our vegetable garden. We are also proud keepers of a flock of happy chickens, providing us with a continuous supply of fresh, organic eggs. With the combined bounty of our garden and the daily eggs from our feathered friends, our backyard is becoming a veritable hub of homegrown food production. The sheer volume and variety of fresh ingredients mean I’m already envisioning countless delicious meals and innovative recipes. And, while it’s a dream for the future, I can’t help but imagine taking our self-sufficiency a step further. If only we had some cows for fresh milk and pigs for pasture-raised meat, then our backyard homesteading dreams would truly be complete! The thought of such a fully integrated, sustainable system is incredibly appealing, promising an even deeper connection to our food sources and a more self-reliant lifestyle for our family.

From Our Garden to Your Table: Fresh Inspiration

Are you cultivating your own garden this year? The joy and rewards of growing your own food are truly incomparable, and I highly encourage everyone to give it a try, no matter how small your space. As our garden continues to flourish, I’ll be sharing frequent updates, documenting its progress and celebrating the vibrant life it brings to our home. Beyond just updates, I’m incredibly excited to announce the upcoming launch of “Garden Fresh Fridays.” This new series will feature a collection of inventive and delicious recipes, all crafted using the bounty straight from our garden. From hearty main courses to refreshing side dishes, you can expect fresh inspiration to help you make the most of your own homegrown goodies.

One particular crop I’m eagerly anticipating is our lettuce. I’m holding out hope that it grows robustly and, crucially, that our carefully constructed fence proves effective in protecting it from the neighborhood bunnies, who seem to have a particular fondness for tender greens. The thought of a crisp, refreshing salad, made with lettuce picked mere minutes before, has my taste buds tingling already. There’s an undeniable difference in flavor and texture when produce goes from garden to plate in such a short span, a freshness that store-bought simply cannot replicate. This anticipation of tasting the fruits (or rather, vegetables!) of our labor is a powerful motivator throughout the growing season.

For those considering starting their own garden or expanding an existing one, now is often the perfect time. Have you already begun planting? While I know some regions of the country might still be experiencing cooler temperatures, here, we’re perfectly on track with delightful weather consistently in the 70s and 80s. These ideal conditions make for excellent planting and rapid growth, fueling our excitement for the warmer months ahead. I am absolutely ready for summer – the long, sun-drenched days, the gentle breezes, and the general feeling of relaxation that permeates the air. There’s something truly magical about summertime in a home that’s alive with garden produce and backyard chickens. It sets the stage for a season of late nights spent enjoying the mild evenings and lazy mornings, savoring coffee amidst the tranquil sounds of nature. It’s a lifestyle we’ve eagerly embraced once more, and we couldn’t be happier to be back in the heart of our vibrant, productive garden.

Embracing the Summer Season: Harvests and Relaxation

The transition into summer also signifies a shift in pace, a delightful slowing down from the hurried rhythm of other seasons. It means more time outdoors, enjoying the warmth and the extended daylight hours. We’re looking forward to a period of late nights filled with laughter and star-gazing, perhaps even some al fresco dining directly from our garden’s bounty. These long evenings are perfectly balanced by the promise of lazy mornings, where waking up is gentle and unhurried. There’s no rush when the best of nature is right outside your door, waiting to be harvested and enjoyed. This serene balance of effort and enjoyment is what makes home gardening such a fulfilling pursuit. Are you as ready for summer as we are?
